Have you heard me talk about the jar of butts?
Yes. You read that right. No need to read it over to be sure that’s the next weird thing Kara said. Stay with me here.
A while ago, scrolling through the FacePlace, I came across a group post in one of my happy groups – either art, craft, DIY, or wholesome happy – and it was one of the scroll-stoppers.
A gal was sharing something that simply made her happy and thought that maybe it would make others happy to see. You know, just something shared to genuinely brighten a stranger’s day on the internet… genuinely (I know it’s rare).
It was a jar of butts.
Filled with little butts of different colors and shapes.
See? I wasn’t making it up.
She had these to make herself smile on tough days and periodically, she’d make them for people she knew needed a pick me up in a totally weird way.
And while the discussion in that thread progressed to people wanting to pay her to make one for them to keep on their desks at work to ward off evil coworkers, the point was she made it because it made her happy.
It’s not what anyone would even consider a “normal” craft like crochet, alcohol ink, or even sculpting an octopus on a switch plate.
And it was perfectly her. DAMN! Can you imagine doing this right now in your own home? Just picture it: you sitting in your making space with a jar, some pantyhose, some stuffing (maybe you even tore open a couch pillow you’ve hated for years but felt too wasteful to get rid of), and a small thread and needle…making tooshies and filling a jar.
Imagine the smile on your face, bursting giggles and deep chuckles as each comes to its own unique life, and someone walking in and staring at what you’re doing.
Would they get it?
Would they indulge your joy, no matter the odd thing you’re making?
Would they question why you’re spending your time that way?
Would they laugh along with you?
Would they fall a bit more in love with you because of how authentically YOU you are?
Although some of those things may be nice or not, the entire point is that IT DOESN’T MATTER… you get to create what makes you happy simply because you want to.
Even if it’s a jar of butts.
If others find some happiness in it, AWESOMESAUCE.
But(t) even if it’s just for you, that matters more. Your happiness in creating matters. You raise the positivity level of your life and the entire world when you find your joy in creating authentically.
And that’s why I do what I do now.
I started hating caking, so I stopped.
I wanted to make brooms and besoms, so I started.
And then I wanted to make all the other things, too, so I chased my ideas and creative thirst with wild abandon.
One of my non-creative mentors shared a fabulous saying once from poet Mary Oliver, perhaps you’ve heard it:
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
I keep that question and idea with me always, every time I’m ready to quash one of my own ideas or wants or desires by telling myself it’s silly, wasteful, unnecessary, or isn’t worth it for any number of reasons…
You have one wild and precious life, and it’s only mine to live, so what am I going to choose to do with it?
Jars of butts could be one thing.
Sharing my creative adventures with you in the hopes that it helps you in your creative adventures is another. (Ok, let’s be honest, someone else did jars of butts so that probably won’t be my gig, but sharing DEFINITELY is.)
When the world feels overwhelming and you don’t know what to do next or what will bring joy, fulfillment, or satisfaction, create. There’s science behind it but I won’t bore you with the details.
Just now that YOU creating matters. And you creating AUTHENTICALLY is powerful and fucking wonderful.
Never underestimate the power of your imagination and hands.
So, in your one wild and precious life, what will be YOUR jar of butts?
P.S. I would love it if you share below in the comments what’s one not-so-typical craft or art or project you’ve been DYING to make?
